Abstract

The teaching of English language in Saudi Arabia remains a challenge in spite of good language planning, curriculum design, appropriate textbooks and infrastructural facilities as well as efficient and qualified teachers. This paper identifies possible factors that impede or motivate learning of the English language at the university

Author Biographies

Laila M Al-Sharqi, King Abdul Aziz University

Laila M. Al-Sharqi is an assistant professor of English in the Department of European Languages and Literature at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Saudi Arabia. Her teaching experience has largely been in the areas of Literary Theory, Fiction, Modern and Postmodern Literature, ESL. She was awarded a PhD in Cultural Studies at the University of Nottingham in 2006. She held several administrative positions at KAU: the Deputy Director of the English Language Center (2006-2009), the Vice Dean for Alumna Affairs (2009-2012). She also worked as the Deputy Director of the Center for Talent and Creativity (2010-2012), and was recently appointed as Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic Studies (2012).

Khairuddin Hashim, King Abdul Aziz University

Khairuddin Hashim is a professor at the Center for Strategic Studies, King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Comp. Science from the University of Bath, United Kingdom. He has research interest, publications and international conference presentations

Pir Suhail Ahmed, King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia

Mr Pir Suhail Ahmed is a lecturer in English at the English Language Institute, King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia. His research interests EFL, testing testing, teacher professional development, CALL and mobile learning.
